Burners Without Borders Seattle provided 12 volunteers, including 2 very helpful kid volunteers for 4 hours on Saturday February 23rd! This was an event organized by Alleycat Acres, who is an Urban Farming Collective based in Seattle. We had Steve at the helm, our fearless leader from Alleycat Acres, along with about 10 volunteers from other various organizations.

This particular site is two full blocks in the Central District of Seattle that border the Catholic Community Services building and the Monica’s Place building parallel to and East of 23rd Ave Sand between Jackson and Yesler streets. Produce from the farm is distributed directly to neighborhood volunteers, Monica’s Village residents, Mary’s Place food bank, the YWCA food bank, and Yesler Tiny House Village.

The “24th & Main” site we worked on has raised beds for vegetables and some fruits, as well as beds along the buildings there that have blueberry bushes and a variety of fruit trees. We were tasked with weeding out everything that had grown over the fall and winter, and cutting and turning in cover crop so the beds were ready for planting in a few weeks.

This was a wonderfully attended and successful event!! BWB Seattle is looking forward to helping with volunteers at future Alleycat Acres events. There are standing weekly Community Garden Gatherings at each of their 4 sites, Monday – Thursday, March through October. I’m sure we will sign up for more of these as a group
